چکیده

Abstract Three regularization concepts are assessed regarding their variational structure and interference with the predicted physics of (quasi-)brittle damage: fracture energy concept, viscous micromorphic regularization. They first introduced in a unified framework, depicting how they distinctively evolve from incremental minimization. The analysis certain time interval one-dimensional example is used to show retains well-posedness within softening regime. By way contrast, concept characterized by ill-posedness—as known previous non-variational analyses. Numerical examples finally demonstrate limitations capabilities each concept. ill-posed local leads its design spatially constant energy—in line Griffith’s theory. regularization, turn, yields well-posed problem but artificial viscosity can add bias unloading thickness. Furthermore, even more important, does not predict due locally heterogeneous loading rates. underlying this undesired dependency. However, it requires largest numerical efforts, since based on coupled two-field formulation.

Threshold-based quasi-static brittle damage evolution

We introduce models for static and quasi-static damage in elastic materials, based on a strain threshold, and then investigate the relationship between these threshold models and the energy-based models introduced in [17] and [15]. A somewhat surprising result is that, while classical solutions for the energy models are also threshold solutions, this is not the case for nonclassical solutions, ...

A micromechanics-based elastoplastic damage model for quasi-brittle rocks

This paper presents a micromechanics-based elastoplastic damage model for quasi-brittle rocks in compression stress state. The plastic strain is considered to be related to frictional sliding along microcracks and inherently coupled with damage evolution. By following a homogenization procedure, we first determine the free energy for the matrix-cracks system. The thermodynamic force associated ...

On variational downscaling, fusion, and assimilation of hydrometeorological states: A unified framework via regularization

Improved estimation of hydro-meteorological states from downsampled observations and background model forecasts in a noisy environment, has been a subject of growing research in the past decades. Here, we introduce a unified variational framework that ties together the problems of downscaling, data fusion and data assimilation as ill-posed inverse problems. This framework seeks solutions beyond...

A Variational View of Partial Brittle Damage Evolution

Under time-dependent loading, an elastic material is undergoing the simplest form of damage, that which consists in passing from its original state to a weaker elastic state. Elaborating on prior work [FM93], we establish existence of a relaxed variational evolution where, at each time, the two states of the material combine to form a fine mixture, optimal from the standpoint of the applied loa...

a comparison of teachers and supervisors, with respect to teacher efficacy and reflection

supervisors play an undeniable role in training teachers, before starting their professional experience by preparing them, at the initial years of their teaching by checking their work within the proper framework, and later on during their teaching by assessing their progress. but surprisingly, exploring their attributes, professional demands, and qualifications has remained a neglected theme i...
